Sustainable and Eco-friendly Boating for the Future

Sustainable and Eco-friendly Boating for the Future

Across the world more people are getting into boating, accessories and the boating lifestyle.

This boom of people makes adopting green technologies and practices in boating more important than ever before.

We can look at all aspects which can improve, both in terms of our boat design; the hull paint and cleaning products used on them, but also at the outboard engine itself and how it functions in combination with the environment,

We should take a minute to make sure that whenever possible, we are making decisions for these elements in our boating experience with the most eco-conscious manner front of mind.

We will look at some eco-friendly technologies as well as best-care practices that we can follow, below.

Lower pollution engine alternatives

Should you be using a two-stroke outboard engine, then you should consider upgrading and improving. For a very small price jump, of 10% - 20% over a carbureted two-stroke outboard, you can significantly reduce air emissions by 75% and use 35% - 50% less gasoline by investing in a four-stroke engine.

You even aid in combating noise pollution by making the boat easier on the ears.

Electric outboard engines

Electric outboard engines provide a greener option over regular gas-powered motors when powering smaller boats. Initially electric propulsion may cost more than a gas-powered outboard engine equivalent, however the long-term expense of an electric engine does decrease over time.

Although modern engines are a bigger initial investment and cannot be repaired easily with DIY methods, the old carburetor engines carry an environmental cost that is just too high and we should all consider making the switch..

Safer anti-fouling bottom paints

Safer alternative paints are now available to use as anti-fouling paints. These replace the old biocide and copper paints that are made for boats.

The new alternative anti-fouling paints create an ultra-smooth and slippery surface which algae and organisms cannot attach or adhere to, and do not need to contain the chemicals harmful to the environment yet serve the same function.

The old copper paints are banned in some states, including Washington so it is a good idea to switch use to a safer alternative.

Non-toxic boat cleaning products

There are thankfully a number of options available for safer non-toxic products that can be used to lower the environmental impact of boating.

Use biodegradable, non-toxic cleaning products and when you do, use the products sparingly.

Prevent the cleaning products from draining directly into the water when working;

Use the designated washdown area at your marina or wash items down on a grassy area which can help absorb runoff before it ends up in a nearby lake or the ocean.

Advice for any engine

No matter how you power your boat, with a new electric , grand modern four-stroke, or older two-stroke outboard engine, there are some best practices for keeping your boat and the sport as green as possible.

  • Always re-fuel on land if possible. Use an automatic stopping device on the funnel or spout to prevent overfilling the gas tank. This greatly reduces the risk of raw fuel or oil mixing with the water.

  • Have some oil-absorbent pads on hand. These soak up hydrocarbons such as gas and oil, but not water. You can also place this around fuel vents to absorb any spills and remove that telltale rainbow sheen.

  • Remember that engines run least efficiently at top speeds. Save those moments to open up the throttle to full for moments when you really need to get out of the way or take evasive action, not just as a routine method of getting to a destination in less time.

We can protect the waterways and our oceans for future generations, and even save some money in the process, by adopting new green technologies in our boating lifestyle.
